About Advisor Roadmap and who runs it

Advisor Roadmap is run by a financial services company whose brokerage arm is a member of FINRA, the brokerage industry's regulator, and whose investment advice arm is registered with the SEC, the federal securities regulator.

It is a free set of guides and tools for becoming a financial advisor, written for people coming from another career.

Anyone can confirm both registrations in the public records that FINRA and the SEC keep on registered firms. Registration means each arm must follow that regulator's rules. It does not mean either regulator endorses the company or this site, and it does not imply a certain level of skill or training. Every page is handled as a communication with the public under FINRA Rule 2210, which requires it to be fair and balanced and bars false, exaggerated or promissory claims. The site is not exam prep, which lives on the sister site advisortrain.com, and it is not training for working advisors.

Why does a financial firm run a free career site?

The company recruits financial advisors, and this site is written for people who come to advising from another career, such as military service, police or fire work, teaching, nursing, banking, insurance, accounting or sales.

  • They tend to ask the same questions, about which licenses to get and in what order, how long it takes, what it costs and whether their earlier work counts. The official answers are spread across FINRA, NASAA (the association of state securities regulators), the SEC, each state's securities regulator and the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).
  • Older figures also circulate, such as job growth from earlier BLS releases. BLS now projects employment of personal financial advisors to grow 1%4 from 2025 to 2035, slower than the average for all occupations.
  • This site puts the official answers in order for your job, your state and the licenses you already hold, with the source next to each one. You can judge whether the career fits while you are still in your current job, before you talk to any firm.
  • The connection is never hidden. Every page footer names the operator, and one box near the end of each page links to the company for readers who want to talk about joining. Nothing else on a page promotes it. Because the company recruits advisors, it has an interest in readers choosing this career. Every number on the site links to an official source so you can check it rather than rely on the company.

What does this site never do?

  • No advice. Nothing on the site is investment, retirement, tax or product advice.
  • No pay promises. Pay appears only as BLS survey figures for all employers, with the year and the range from the lowest-paid tenth to the highest-paid tenth of workers. Never as what you, or anyone at a particular firm, will earn.
  • No firm names, rankings or comparisons. Pages compare roles, licenses and ways of working, never employers.
  • No testimonials. No reader quotes and no stories of people who made the switch.
  • No data from regulators' records about other people. The site links to regulators' public records only for the operating company. Nothing from those records appears on a page except the company's own registration details at the top of this page.
  • No paid placement. No page, link or listing on the site is paid for.

Each published version of each page is kept on record, like the company's other communications.

How are the pages researched and checked?

Every number is stored as a record with its source link, the exact words or table cell behind it and the date it was read.

  • Apart from years, calendar dates and the names of exams, forms, rules and occupation codes, a page cannot print a number any other way, and an automated check fails any page that tries. A record can appear on a page only after a separate check re-reads the source and confirms the quote and the value. You can test this on any page by opening its sources list.
  • Every page is reviewed before it is published, including its title, search description and image text, and a fact where official sources disagree does not print until the conflict is settled. Each page shows the date its data was last updated, and pages are re-checked when their official sources publish new data or a regulator announces a change.
  • The full method, including why BLS reports different counts of advisors in different surveys, is on How we make these pages. Every source with its license and refresh date is on Data and sources.

How do I report an error, and how is it corrected?

Use the contact link in the footer of any page.

  • Say which page and what you think is wrong, with a link to the source if you have one. You only need to give your message, plus an email address if you want a reply, and it goes to an inbox the operating company monitors and keeps on record.
  • When a fact is wrong, its record is fixed, every page that uses it updates, and the correction is listed below with the date, the page and what changed. A new figure from a routine release, such as the yearly BLS update, is noted on the page as an update rather than listed as a correction.

Questions people ask

Who runs Advisor Roadmap?

A financial services company whose brokerage arm is a FINRA member and whose investment advice arm is registered with the SEC. Its legal names and registration numbers are listed at the top of this page with links to its public records at FINRA and the SEC, and every page footer names it.

Is Advisor Roadmap free?

Yes. Every guide and tool is free, with no paywall and no sign-up. The company that runs the site pays for it because it recruits financial advisors, and one box near the end of each page links to it.

Is Advisor Roadmap legit?

You can check rather than take the site's word for it. The company's FINRA and SEC registrations link to its public records from this page, though registration is not an endorsement by either regulator. Every number lists its official source and the date it was read, and confirmed errors are listed on this page.

Is Advisor Roadmap part of FINRA or the government?

No. It is run by a private company. Its brokerage arm is a FINRA member and its investment advice arm is registered with the SEC, but neither regulator endorses the company or this site. Citing FINRA, NASAA, the SEC or CFP Board as sources does not mean any of them endorses it either.

How do I report a mistake?

Use the contact link in the footer of any page and say which page is wrong and why. A confirmed error is fixed in its fact record, which updates every page that uses it, and is listed with its date on this page.
