Financial advisor jobs and pay by city
The New York-Newark-Jersey City metro area has the most financial advisor jobs in the US, with 23,9801 personal financial advisors on payrolls in May 2025, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics (OEWS) survey.
Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim (13,9801) and Miami-Fort Lauderdale-West Palm Beach (8,3901) come next. BLS publishes advisor figures for 3311 of the 3931 metro areas in its survey, Puerto Rico included, and the full table below lists every one.
New York also had the highest advisor median BLS reported for any metro, $170,0501, with San Francisco-Oakland-Fremont next at $160,6101. Below those two, pay does not follow job counts, and Los Angeles, second for jobs, had $124,4901. The US median was $105,0702, with one in ten advisors earning less than $50,1902 and one in ten more than $357,0202. These are survey figures for all employers, describing people already in the job, not what someone new to it earns or what any firm pays.
The tables below count people working in the job, not open positions. If your city is not in them, it sits inside a metro with another name, BLS published no advisor figures for its metro, or it lies outside any metro area. A row with a figure missing means BLS withheld that figure. Each case is explained below. Brokers whose main job is selling securities are a separate BLS occupation and are not in these counts.

The ranking uses every metro with a released job count. Boston is absent because BLS withheld its advisor job count for May 2025.
Which cities have the most financial advisors per capita?
Bridgeport-Stamford-Danbury, CT has the highest concentration of advisor jobs of any metro where BLS released one, 3.601 times the US share. BLS does not count advisors per resident. It publishes advisor jobs per thousand jobs in each metro and the location quotient, which corrects a raw job count for the size of the metro. The location quotient divides advisors' share of all jobs in a metro by their share of all US jobs, so a value above one means advisors make up a bigger part of the local workforce than they do nationally. Among metros with 1,0005 or more advisor jobs, Trenton-Princeton, NJ comes next, and three North Carolina metros, Durham-Chapel Hill, Charlotte and Raleigh, make the list. Manchester-Nashua, NH, just under that size with 9505 advisor jobs, is second among all metros at 2.795 times the US share.
| Metro area | Share of jobs against the US share1 | Advisors per thousand jobs1 | Advisors employed1 | Median1 |

Concentration and pay are separate questions. Durham-Chapel Hill has one of the highest shares of advisor jobs, yet its median of $63,3001 is the lowest of any metro with 1,0005 or more advisor jobs. This ranking covers metro areas. The advisor career map ranks whole states by advisors per thousand jobs.
Which cities have the highest median financial advisor salary?
New York and San Francisco-Oakland-Fremont have the highest BLS medians for advisors of any metro. Among metros with 1,0005 or more advisor jobs they stand well above the rest, and half of the ten highest are in California. These are BLS survey medians for all employers, a sort order on a survey figure and not a guide to where someone new to the job would be paid more.

BLS publishes an error figure for the mean wage but none for the median. This page shows the job count error as a guide to how solid each row is.
The size filter matters. Sort every metro by median with no filter and two small places come third and fourth. Muskegon-Norton Shores, MI shows a median of $159,9901 from 1001 advisors, and Springfield, IL shows $154,3701 from 1001 advisors with a count error of 24.5%1. A median from that few people says little about advisor pay in the area.
In every metro of this size except Durham-Chapel Hill, the pay range inside the metro is wider than the whole gap between metro medians. In New York one in ten advisors earned less than $81,5201 and one in ten more than $420,6301, while the medians of all 431 metros of this size run only from $63,3001 to $170,0501.
Why other sites show different top cities.
- Sites built from job postings report the base pay advertised in listings, not a survey of people in the job. That is how a posting-based list read in October 2026 could put Houston near the top for pay while BLS put the Houston metro's advisor median at $98,9301, below the US median.
- Sites built from self-reported pay rely on whoever chose to answer.
- Some pages still print an older BLS release, with old metro names and a capped top end. The BLS May 2023 profile for this job, with its top ten metro tables, still comes up in search, though BLS now publishes May 2025 profiles in its OEWS profiles tool. Some AI search answers seen in October 2026 repeated May 2019 metro figures as if they were current.
- Some show only a mean, which high earners pull above the median, or label a state figure as a city.
How to read these numbers
- Brokers are counted separately. This page counts personal financial advisors, code 13-2052 in the Standard Occupational Classification (SOC), the federal list of occupations BLS uses. BLS counts people whose main job is selling securities as securities, commodities and financial services sales agents (SOC 41-3031), a separate occupation that is not in these tables. In the New York metro there were 59,4501 of them in May 2025 against 23,9801 personal financial advisors. The New York metro page and the other metro pages show both.
- Self-employed advisors are left out. OEWS counts wage and salary jobs only. The BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook counts 299,4003 advisor jobs in 2025 including the self-employed, about 10%6 of the total, against 266,8002 in OEWS. BLS publishes no metro figures that add them back, so the number of advisors working in each metro is likely higher.
- Every figure is an estimate. BLS publishes a relative standard error with each job count, a measure of model error expressed as a percentage of the estimate. The higher it is, the less precise the count. Small sample in the table marks rows whose job count error is above 20%7, so treat those counts as rough. That applies to 951 of the 3101 metros where BLS released both a job count and a median.
- Some figures are not released. A cell marked Not released is an estimate BLS withheld, explained after the table.
- Each metro is compared with one state. The Main state's median column is the BLS median for the state BLS lists first for the metro, so a metro that crosses a state line is compared with its main state only. BLS withheld the Louisiana, Maine and Puerto Rico medians.
- The survey pools several years. The May 2025 figures combine survey responses collected over 38 years, not a single month (OEWS technical notes).
- No year to year comparisons. BLS does not encourage using OEWS to track changes over time, so this page does not say whether a metro's pay or job count rose or fell.
- The top end is new. From the May 2025 survey on, BLS publishes many high percentiles as numbers instead of capping them at $239,2009, so pages using older data show a lower or blank top end.

Why is my city missing from the table?
There are four reasons, and the fix differs for each.
Your town is inside a metro with another name
BLS uses the federal metro definitions in OMB Bulletin 23-0111, which group whole counties around one or more main cities and name the metro after them. Suburbs and smaller cities report under that name. The county lookup below covers common cases.
BLS withheld one figure
BLS says an estimate may be withheld for reasons that include failing its quality standards and protecting the confidentiality of the employers that answered, and it does not say which reason applies (OEWS FAQ). For advisors, 101 metros have the job count withheld and 111 have the wages withheld. Those rows are still in the table with what BLS did release.
BLS published no advisor row at all
When neither the count nor the wage can be published, BLS leaves the job out of that metro's data. That is the case in 621 of the 3931 metros, mostly smaller metros. The largest of them are Anchorage, AK, Laredo, TX and Barnstable Town, MA. For those places the nearest BLS advisor figures are for the whole state.
Your town is outside any metro area
BLS reports it in a nonmetropolitan area, covered in the table further down.
| Metro area | Withheld1 | What BLS released1 |
|---|---|---|
| Boston-Cambridge-Newton, MA-NH | Employment not released1 | Median $126,5305 |
| Portland-Vancouver-Hillsboro, OR-WA | Employment not released1 | Median $122,8301 |
| Hartford-West Hartford-East Hartford, CT | Employment not released1 | Median $81,9901 |
| Charleston-North Charleston, SC | Employment not released1 | Median $125,7001 |
| Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington, TX | Wages not released1 | 6,2301 advisors employed, 0.905 times the US share |
| Virginia Beach-Chesapeake-Norfolk, VA-NC | Wages not released1 | 9801 advisors employed |
So a list that ranks Boston by advisor jobs, or Dallas by advisor pay, is not using the May 2025 BLS survey.

BLS lists Connecticut areas by planning region rather than county. For any other county, find it on the BLS May 2025 area definitions page, which lists every county under its metro or nonmetropolitan area.
Financial advisor jobs and pay outside metro areas
BLS groups the counties outside metros into 1351 nonmetropolitan areas, defined with each state's workforce agency. 961 of them have an advisor row and 781 have both a count and a median. Counts are small, and the largest is 4501 in the Kansas nonmetropolitan area, so most rows carry a wide error.

Does the metro change how you get licensed?
No. The licensing exams, from the SIE (Securities Industry Essentials exam) on, are the same in every metro, and you can take SIE, Series 63, Series 65, Series 6613 without a firm to sponsor you.
- What changes is the state that registers you, its fees and its continuing education rules, which matters most in metros that cross a state line.
- The state guides for California, Florida, Illinois, New York, North Carolina and Texas cover registration, and all states adds the others as they publish.
- Which licenses do financial advisors need? explains each license.
- If you are still in another job, you can take those exams before you leave it, but a pass does not last forever.
- An SIE pass stays valid for 414 years, and in most states a Series 63, 65 or 66 pass expires if you are not registered within 215 years.
- Becoming a financial advisor as a second career puts the steps in order.
- Exam prep is at Advisor Train.
Questions people ask
Do you have to live in a big city to become a financial advisor?
Does this page list financial advisor job openings?
No. The figures count people working as personal financial advisors in May 2025, not vacancies, so a job board is the place for current openings in your city. Nationally BLS projects about 17,1003 advisor openings a year and growth of 1%3 from 2025 to 2035. Older pages still show growth near 17.1%16, a figure from the 2023 to 2033 projection BLS has since replaced.
Are living costs higher in the cities with the highest advisor pay?
Yes, in the two at the top. The U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis put 2024 prices 12.6%17 above the US average in the New York metro and 15.6%17 above it in San Francisco-Oakland-Fremont (Regional Price Parities). The BLS wages on this page are not adjusted for local prices. The New York and San Francisco metro pages show prices beside pay.
