How to become a financial advisor in Illinois
To become a financial advisor in Illinois, pass the Series 65 exam, or the Series 7 and Series 66, and get registered with the Illinois Secretary of State, Securities Department1.
That registration, as an investment adviser representative, is filed by the advisory firm you join and is what lets you give investment advice for a fee. Section 130.843 of the Illinois securities rules sets the exams. To sell stocks, bonds or funds as well, you pass the Securities Industry Essentials exam (SIE), a brokerage firm sponsors you for the Series 7, and you add the Series 63 or 66. Life, health and annuity sales take a separate producer license from the Illinois Department of Insurance2.
Illinois's registration rules ask for exams, not a college degree, though BLS lists "Bachelor's degree"3 as the typical entry education for the job. The SIE and the Series 65 need no firm sponsor, so you can pass both while still in your current job, but a Series 65 pass lapses if no firm registers you within 24 years.
Illinois rewrote its adviser rules effective March 19, 20255. The designations that replace the adviser exam are now the CFP® certification, ChFC, PFS, CFA or CIMA6, with the Certified Investment Management Analyst (CIMA) taking the place of the older Chartered Investment Counselor (CIC), and since January 1, 20267 every representative must complete 128,9 continuing education credits a year or be marked "CE Inactive" at renewal. Some Illinois guides still miss both changes.

Which licenses do you need to be a financial advisor in Illinois?
What you plan to do decides which exams you take and which agency registers you. Some roles need more than one row.
| Your goal | Exams | Firm sponsor needed? | Who registers or licenses you | Exam fees |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Give investment advice for a fee | Series 65, or Series 7 and Series 66, or a waiver designation | No sponsor for the Series 65. An adviser firm files your registration | Illinois Secretary of State, Securities Department1 | $18721 for the Series 65 |
| Sell stocks, bonds and funds | SIE, Series 7, then the Series 63 or Series 66 | Yes for the Series 7 | FINRA and the Securities Department | $64222-24 with the Series 63 |
| Sell securities and give advice for a fee | SIE, Series 7 and Series 66 | Yes for the Series 7 | FINRA and the Securities Department | $67222,23,25 |

| Sell life, health and annuity insurance | General and State exams for each line, after a pre-licensing course | No | Illinois Department of Insurance2 | $9216 per line, $18416 for life plus accident and health |
Exam fees are as read October 29, 202620.
FINRA, the securities industry's self-regulator, sets the SIE, Series 6 and Series 7 fees. NASAA, the association of state securities regulators, sets the Series 63, 65 and 66 fees. The insurance exam fees come from the Pearson VUE handbook and include an Illinois administrative fee. The Illinois registration fee is left out because the state's published rule and the national fee schedules list different amounts, so ask the Securities Department before you file. No total includes study materials, prep courses, retakes or the FINRA registration and fingerprint fees in step 5. Some employers pay exam and registration fees for people they sponsor and some do not, so ask before you enroll.
The Series 66 counts toward advice only alongside the Series 7, which is why the advice row lists them together. The license path finder shows the exams in order for your goal, the cost and time tool prices your own path, and the roadmap builder puts the steps in order for your situation.
If you are changing careers, the exams that need no sponsor can come first. The SIE, Series 63 and Series 65 can all be passed before any firm hires you (FINRA SIE page, NASAA exam FAQ), while the Series 7 and Series 6 wait until a firm enrolls you. An SIE pass stays valid for 422 years, but a Series 63 or 65 pass lapses if no firm registers you in time (step 3), so the SIE can come well before a move and the state exams closer to it. Insurance agents already licensed in Illinois hold the insurance license some advisor roles need, covered in from insurance agent to financial advisor.
How do you register in Illinois, step by step?
Illinois does not issue a separate securities license. What people call an Illinois securities license is your registration with the Securities Department as a salesperson (the Illinois word for a securities agent) or as an investment adviser representative, filed by your firm after you pass the exams.
Decide whether you need a sponsoring firm
Selling securities does, because only a brokerage firm can enroll you for the Series 7, covered in how to get sponsored for the Series 7. Advice only does not, though an adviser firm, or one you start, still files your registration.
Take the SIE if you will sell securities
The fee is $10022 as read October 29, 202620, and the SIE alone does not let you do any securities business. See the FINRA exam pages.
Pass the qualifying exams
You can request the Series 65 yourself, and you then have 1204 days to sit it. The Series 7 needs your sponsoring firm to enroll you, with a window of 12027 days. NASAA explains each state exam on its exam page. For exam prep, Advisor Train has courses for the SIE, Series 7, Series 63, Series 65 and Series 66. Register within 24 years of passing or the exams lapse. The exam validity extension program described below helps only people who have already been registered.
Add a state law exam if you will sell securities
Section 130.832(a) requires the Series 63 or Series 66 with the Series 7 or one of the other general FINRA exams it lists, and sets a minimum age of 1828. A limited registration uses the Series 6, 22, 52, 62 or 79, each with the Series 63 or 6629 in place of the Series 7 (Section 130.832(b)).
Your firm files your Form U4
The U4 is the registration form that carries your history and background answers. For a representative, Section 130.839 has the adviser firm file it and pay the Illinois fee through FINRA's CRD registration system rather than directly with the state. A brokerage firm files the same way for an agent, and FINRA also charges $12530 for each initial U4 plus $3331 for electronic fingerprints, FBI fee included (FINRA fees as read October 29, 202620). What the U4 and background check cover.
Keep the registration current
For a representative, the adviser firm amends the U4 within 1032 business days of any change that makes it inaccurate (Section 130.839(d)) and files a Form U5 within 3033 days if you leave (Section 130.839(e)). Representative registrations expire each December 3113 and renew through CRD, and the year's continuing education has to be reported by then.
Add the insurance license in parallel if your role needs it
It runs through a different agency, covered below.
If you plan to start your own investment adviser firm, the firm registers too, which the broker-dealer and RIA guide explains. The Securities Department is the official source for firm and representative filings.
Which exam waivers does Illinois accept?
Does a CFP® certification waive the Series 65 in Illinois?
Yes. Section 130.843(c) waives the representative exams for anyone who currently holds one of the CFP® certification, ChFC, PFS, CFA or CIMA6, plus any designation the Secretary of State recognizes by rule or order. Spelled out, those are the Chartered Financial Consultant, Personal Financial Specialist, Chartered Financial Analyst and Certified Investment Management Analyst. You send the Securities Department written proof of the designation before you are registered (Section 130.843(e)). A designation waives only the representative exams, so selling securities still takes the FINRA exams and the Series 63 or 66. The CFP® certification guide covers what that credential takes.
I was registered before. Do I have to retake the exams?
Not if you were registered as an investment adviser representative in any state within 234 years of filing in Illinois (Section 130.843(b)(2)).
If you left longer ago, Illinois's own exam validity extension program under Section 130.882 may still cover you. If you were registered as a representative for at least 135 year before leaving, you can keep a Series 65, or the adviser part of a Series 66, valid for up to 536 years. You must elect it within 237 years of leaving, leave with no continuing education shortfall, and complete the same 128,9 credits each calendar year while you are out, counted from the year you left even if you elect late. People who were registered for at least 135 year as both a representative and a salesperson can use FINRA's Maintaining Qualifications Program for the products half.
Coming back to an Illinois registration also means making up the continuing education for every period you were away, unless you pass the exams again (Section 130.881(h)).
What is different about Illinois?
Does Illinois require continuing education for investment adviser representatives?
Yes. Since January 1, 20267, Section 130.881 requires 128,9 credits each year, 68 in ethics and professional responsibility (at least 38 hours of it on ethics) and 69 in products and practice. The credits must come from an authorized provider who reports them to IARD, the registration system FINRA runs for advisers, and extra credits do not carry forward. The start date is the one NASAA's IAR CE map lists for Illinois, and the rule counts each reporting period as twelve months.
- FINRA continuing education covers half. If you are also a registered salesperson of a FINRA member firm and keep up FINRA's continuing education, that counts for the products and practice credits (Section 130.881(b)). The ethics credits still apply.
- Missing it has a clock. A representative who misses the credits renews as "CE Inactive" at year end. Anyone still CE Inactive at the close of the next calendar year cannot register or renew until every missing credit is done (Section 130.881(e)).
Why do other Illinois guides say something different?
- Designations. Some still list the CIC as a waiver, which Illinois dropped in the March 19, 20255 rewrite. Others print NASAA's national list, which adds the Master of Science in Financial Services (MSFS) that Illinois does not name.
- Continuing education. Some leave it out. It has been required since January 1, 20267.
- Form U4 updates. Some give a longer window. Section 130.839(d) gives 1032 business days.
- Fees. Some quote the national fee schedules and some quote the older state rule, and the two disagree. Confirm the current amount with the Securities Department.
- Pay. Some Illinois salary pages still print BLS figures from 2019 or job-posting averages with no survey method behind them, and one shows the current median without naming BLS and overstates its gap to the US median. The figures below are BLS May 2025.
- Job growth. Some still quote national advisor job growth of 17.1%38 from the BLS 2023 to 2033 projection. BLS replaces its projection every year, and the current one is below.
Do you need an Illinois insurance license?
You need one to sell life, health or annuity products. Selling variable annuities takes both this license and a securities registration, because those products are securities as well as insurance. The license is the resident producer license from the Illinois Department of Insurance2, with life and accident and health as separate lines of authority.
Wait 514 days, then apply online
You apply through NIPR, the national online system for insurance license applications. Illinois has taken applications only through NIPR since July 1, 202339. The license fee is $21517 for 217 years as read October 29, 202620, prorated to your birth month, plus NIPR's own processing fee. The Department's steps list background questions on the application and no fingerprint appointment.
Moving to Illinois with the same lines already licensed in another state? You skip the course and the exams if you are still licensed there, or if you apply within 9041 days of cancelling it. The Department checks the old license in the national producer database. Its moving to Illinois page is the official source, and the licenses overview explains how advisors use this license.
Where are the financial advisor jobs in Illinois?
Illinois has 1.618 personal financial advisor jobs per thousand jobs against 1.718,42 for the US. Its location quotient, which compares a job's share of local employment with its share nationally, is 0.9318, so advisors are slightly less concentrated here than in the country as a whole. Securities sales agents are the opposite. Their location quotient is 1.4518 statewide and 1.6942 in the Chicago metro, and Illinois payrolls hold about 2.918 of them for every personal financial advisor. BLS defines securities sales agents as people who buy and sell securities or commodities in investment and trading firms, or provide financial services to businesses and individuals, and who may advise customers about stocks, bonds and mutual funds. Some advisor-type work is counted under that code rather than as personal financial advisors, but the code is wider than advising, so its Illinois figures are not advisor pay.

Most Illinois advisor jobs sit in the Chicago metro. Outside the Chicago and St. Louis metros, Peoria, Springfield and the Quad Cities have the largest published counts, and Decatur runs above the state rate on a small base. Bloomington stands out for insurance instead, with 8.842 insurance sales agents per thousand jobs, a location quotient of 2.8742. From insurance agent to financial advisor covers which licenses an insurance agent already holds.

The Chicago metro includes part of northwest Indiana, and the St. Louis and Quad Cities metros cross into Missouri and Iowa, so their counts include jobs outside Illinois. Springfield, Rockford, Champaign-Urbana and Decatur estimates rest on small samples, with relative standard errors above one in five. BLS withholds Decatur advisor wages and publishes no advisor row for Kankakee, so any wage for those areas you see elsewhere did not come from this survey. Chicago metro prices ran 3.6%43 above the US average in 2024 by the Bureau of Economic Analysis price measure, while Illinois as a whole sat at the US average (index 99.95844). These are price levels, not an adjustment to the wages above.
How should you read these numbers?
- The tables come from the BLS wage survey (Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, OEWS), which counts wage and salary workers only, so it leaves out self-employed advisors. Nationally, the BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook counts 299,4003 advisor jobs in 2025 including the self-employed, against 266,80019 in OEWS.
- The Illinois mean of $158,45018 sits well above the median because the highest earners pull it up, so the median is the better guide to the middle of the range.
- From the May 2025 survey on, BLS publishes the top tenth of advisor wages as a number instead of capping it at $239,20045, so pages using older data show a lower top end.
- BLS warns against comparing survey years to track pay changes.
Are financial advisor jobs growing in Illinois?
The state and national projections point different ways. The Illinois Department of Employment Security projects personal financial advisor jobs in the state to grow 6.5%46 from 2024 to 2034, faster than the 2.8%46 for all Illinois occupations, with about 83046 openings a year. Nationally, BLS projects advisor jobs to grow 1%3 from 2025 to 2035, slower than the average for all occupations, with about 17,1003 openings a year, mostly to replace advisors who change jobs or retire. The two projections come from different agencies and different ten-year periods, so the gap between them is not a measure of Illinois against the US.
On whether AI will replace advisors, the BLS outlook says AI tools for financial advice may moderate demand for advisors, while many consumers are expected to keep relying on human advisors for complex and specialized advice. Is financial advisor a good career? looks at what that means for newcomers, and the advisor career map puts these Illinois figures beside every other state.
What if you are also registered in a neighboring state?
Under Section 130.881(g), a representative registered both in Illinois and in a home state meets the Illinois credits by meeting the home state's, as long as that state's rule is at least as strict. On NASAA's IAR CE map as read in October 2026, Wisconsin and Kentucky require representative continuing education. Indiana has told NASAA its requirement starts in 20277. Missouri and Iowa are not on NASAA's list, so a representative whose home state is one of those meets the Illinois credits directly.
Guides for Indiana, Wisconsin, Iowa, Missouri and Kentucky are listed on all state guides as they publish.
Questions people ask
Who regulates financial advisors in Illinois?
Two agencies. The Illinois Secretary of State, Securities Department1 registers investment adviser representatives and securities salespeople, with filings sent through FINRA's CRD system. The Illinois Department of Insurance2 licenses insurance producers, with applications sent through NIPR. Neither agency handles the other's license, so many advisors deal with both.
Do I need a degree to become a financial advisor in Illinois?
No Illinois rule requires one. Section 130.843 and Section 130.832 require exams or a waiver designation. BLS still lists "Bachelor's degree"3 as the typical entry education for the job, so guides that call a degree a requirement are describing what is typical, not the law. The CFP® certification has its own degree rule. The step by step guide covers education choices.
How long does it take to become a financial advisor in Illinois?
No rule sets a minimum time. Beyond sitting the exams, the time goes to study and, for the Series 7, getting hired by a firm that will sponsor you. After that comes supervised training, which BLS says usually lasts more than a year47. During that training new advisors work under senior advisors and learn to build a client network, and BLS notes that many advisors spend a lot of time marketing their services. How long it takes to become a financial advisor breaks the timeline down.
What does a financial advisor do day to day?
BLS describes advisors meeting clients to discuss their financial goals, explaining the services they offer, answering questions about investment options and their risks, and recommending or choosing investments for clients. Many also spend a lot of time marketing their services, and some meetings with new or existing clients fall on evenings and weekends. Becoming an advisor as a second career covers what the switch looks like from another job.
How much do financial advisors make in Illinois?
BLS counted 9,76018 personal financial advisors on Illinois payrolls in May 2025, not counting the self-employed. Their median wage was $120,13018, with one in ten earning less than $51,82018 and one in ten more than $328,65018. That median sat 14%18,19 above the US median of $105,07019, and the Chicago metro median was lower, at $113,21042. These are survey figures for all employers, not a forecast of what any one person will earn or what any firm pays.
