How to become a financial advisor as a second career

To become a financial advisor as a second career, take the exams that need no employer while you keep your current job, then apply to firms, because only a firm that hires you can sponsor your remaining exams and register you.

FINRA, which oversees brokerage firms, lets anyone 181 or older take its entry exam, the Securities Industry Essentials (SIE), on their own, and the Series 65 exam for advisory work and coursework for CFP® certification need no firm either. The Series 6 or 7 exam, the Form U4 registration filing and fingerprints wait until a firm hires you.

Two rules set the timing. An SIE pass stays valid for 41 years without a firm, so it can come early. A passed Series 63, 65 or 66 expires in most states if you are not registered within 22 years, says NASAA, the association of state securities regulators behind those exams, so timing it close to a job offer keeps it from lapsing.

You do not need a finance background. The Bureau of Labor Statistics lists related work experience as "None"3 and typical entry education as "Bachelor's degree"4, and says employers usually do not require a specific field of study.

What does a financial advisor do day to day?

This is the work you would trade your current job for, as BLS describes it.

  • Working with clients. You meet clients to discuss their goals, explain the services you offer, answer questions about investment options and risks, and help them plan for things such as a child's education or retirement.
  • Managing accounts. You research investments, recommend or choose them for clients, and check accounts to decide whether changes are needed.
  • Finding clients. BLS says many advisors spend a lot of time marketing their services and must be convincing and persistent to grow a client base.
  • Hours. Most work full time and some work more than 4014 hours a week. Meetings with new and current clients can fall on evenings and weekends.
  • Skills. BLS lists analytical, interpersonal, math, sales, and speaking skills15 as the important qualities. The page for your current job shows which of them you already use.

"Financial advisor" is a job title, not a license. What you may sell or advise on depends on the licenses and registrations you hold. Whether the career suits you is covered in is financial advisor a good career.

How to switch careers while you still have a job

What are the steps, in order?

  1. Take the SIE while you are still employed

No firm is needed, the pass lasts 41 years, and CFP Board notes that most firms sponsor exams after hiring but credentials you already hold make you a more competitive applicant.

  2. Talk to people doing the work

CFP Board suggests asking advisors for short informational interviews, in which you mention your past field and the skills you bring, and going to industry events.

  3. Choose a route

The brokerage route, buying and selling securities for clients through a broker-dealer, means the Series 6 or 7 plus the Series 63 or 66. The advisory route, giving investment advice as an investment adviser representative (IAR) of a registered investment adviser (RIA), means the Series 65. Which licenses advisors need compares them.

  4. Apply for a role that sponsors exams

Trainee programs, bank branches, insurance-affiliated firms and support roles at adviser firms are the settings, compared further down.

  5. Take the sponsored exams once hired

That means the Series 6 or 7 and the Series 63 or 66, which NASAA lets you take in either order. On the advisory route the Series 65 belongs near the offer, because the pass can expire before anyone registers you.

  6. Get registered

The firm files your Form U4, submits your fingerprints and registers you with your state.

  7. Report any outside job

Once registered, FINRA's current rule requires written notice to your firm before you keep other paid work, and your firm may require more.

CFP® certification, a financial planning credential awarded by CFP Board, is optional. Its coursework, exam and experience hours can run alongside any step.

Passing is not the same as being licensed. FINRA says the SIE alone does not let you register or do securities business, and NASAA says passing an exam is a prerequisite to a license, not a license. The Series 66 can also be taken without a firm, but NASAA counts it as the Series 63 and 65 only once you hold the SIE and Series 7, so on its own it does not let you register.

Exam prep is at Advisor Train (SIE, Series 6, Series 7, Series 63, Series 65, Series 66). How people land the sponsored role is in how to get a firm to sponsor your Series 7.

  5. Leaving after you register

Exams lapse once you have been unregistered 222 years or more. FINRA's Maintaining Qualifications Program (MQP) can extend FINRA exams to 523 years if you were registered at least 123 year, though NASAA says a state may not count that extension when it registers you

What it means for timing A break shorter than that does not erase your exams

    Who sets it FINRA, NASAA

Experience for CFP® certification can be earned two ways. The standard pathway is 6,00016 hours of work such as working with clients, supporting or supervising the planning process, an internship or residency, or teaching college financial planning courses. The apprenticeship pathway is 4,00016 hours under the direct supervision of a CFP® professional, mainly with individual clients. Detail is in CFP® certification requirements.

These rule clocks are the only timing this page gives. How long each route usually takes end to end is in how long it takes to become a financial advisor, and the roadmap builder puts the steps in order for your job, state and dates.

These are exam fees only, as FINRA and NASAA listed them on October 29, 202610. Registration adds the FINRA Form U4 and fingerprint fees in the table above, plus your state's registration and insurance license fees. The licensing cost and time tool totals them for your state.

Can you keep your current job once you are registered?

Studying and testing do not touch your current job, because FINRA's outside activity rules apply only to registered people. Once a firm registers you, they do.

Today, FINRA Rule 3270 says a registered person may not work as an employee, contractor, officer, director or partner of another business, or be paid from any outside business activity, without prior written notice to their firm. The firm reviews the notice and can set conditions or prohibit the activity.

From October 25, 202713, Rule 3290 replaces Rule 3270 and requires prior written notice only for investment-related outside activities. FINRA's notice says lower-risk work with no investment link, such as refereeing, driving for a car service or bartending, drops out of the rule. Investment-related is broad, though. The rule names working for a bank or as an insurance agent, so keeping a bank or insurance job still needs notice. Two things stay. Your firm may still require more than the rule does, and Form U4 still asks about outside activities in its Other Business question.

Part time

Every step that needs no firm can be done part time while you keep your job, and CFP Board says part-time positions can count toward the experience requirement for CFP® certification. CFP Board lists part-time ways to build experience, including an online summer externship and volunteer tax preparation through the IRS VITA program.

Working as an advisor part time after you are registered turns on the rules above and on your firm. Advisor Train's guide to being a part-time financial advisor covers it.

Where do career changers get hired?

BLS shows where advisor jobs were in 2025. The split covers all advisors, not only career changers, and it describes settings rather than any list of firms.

CFP Board says career changers apply for roles such as paraplanner, associate planner and client service associate. Paraplanner work typically counts toward the experience hours for CFP® certification, while purely administrative client service work does not.

Openings come mostly from turnover, not growth. BLS projects 1%4 growth from 2025 to 2035 and about 17,1004 openings a year, most of them from replacing advisors who retire or move to other work. Job counts differ by source. BLS counted 299,4004 advisor jobs in 2025 including the self-employed, while its wage survey counted 266,80024 in May 2025 because it leaves the self-employed out.

What is your first year as a financial advisor like?

BLS describes the same start for everyone, career changer or not, and CFP Board describes the support roles career changers apply for.

  1. Supervised training

You work under senior advisors and learn to build a client network and develop investment portfolios. It usually lasts more than a year11.

  2. Finishing exams and registration

If a firm hired you before every exam was done, the sponsored exams and your state law exam come now.

  3. Building a client list

The marketing and evening meetings described above start here, alongside the training.

  4. If you start in a support role

CFP Board says a paraplanner gathers client documents, enters data into planning software and drafts plans for the lead advisor, while an associate advisor takes notes in client meetings and presents parts of plans under supervision.

How are financial advisors paid?

BLS says advisors at financial services firms are often paid a salary plus bonuses, while those at investment or planning firms and the self-employed charge a flat fee or earn commissions on the products they sell.

Which structure you start on depends on the channel, covered in employee vs independent advisors. Before you accept an offer, CFP Board suggests asking how the role is paid, whether you will find new clients or serve existing ones, and whether the role is client-facing.

For wage and salary workers at all employers, BLS put the median annual wage for personal financial advisors at $105,07024 in May 2025. The survey leaves out the self-employed. The lowest tenth earned less than $50,19024 and the highest tenth more than $357,02024.

Questions people ask

Is there an age limit on switching careers to financial advisor?

No rule sets a maximum age. FINRA sets a minimum age of 181 for the SIE and no maximum, and BLS lists no related work experience for the job. What changes with age is covered in is it too late to become a financial advisor.

How hard is it to get hired as a financial advisor?

No official source publishes hiring odds. BLS names a bachelor's degree as the typical entry education, says employers usually do not require a specific field, and says sales skills matter, because advisors grow their own client base. Securities and investment firms held 65%12 of advisor jobs in 2025, and CFP Board names paraplanner, associate planner and client service associate as entry roles career changers apply for.

Is financial advising a good second career?

No official source rates it, so it turns on whether the work suits you. BLS lists analytical, interpersonal, math, sales, and speaking skills15 as the important qualities, and says many advisors spend a lot of time marketing their services and may meet clients on evenings and weekends. The outlook, pay spread and trade-offs are in is financial advisor a good career.

Can I be a financial advisor as a side hustle?

The studying and testing can be done on the side. Once registered, FINRA Rule 3270 requires prior written notice to your firm before you keep any outside job, and the firm may limit it. From October 25, 202713, Rule 3290 covers only investment-related outside work, though your firm may still require more.

Will AI replace financial advisors?

No official forecast says so. BLS says AI tools for financial advice may moderate demand for advisors, but many consumers are expected to keep relying on human advisors for complex and specialized investment advice. It still projects 1%4 growth and about 17,1004 openings a year from 2025 to 2035.
