From bank teller or personal banker to financial advisor
Yes. A personal banker or bank teller can become a financial advisor by passing licensing exams in order and getting registered through a firm.
The first exam is the Securities Industry Essentials (SIE), which FINRA, the self-regulatory organization for broker-dealers and their staff, lets you take on your own while you still work at the bank. Next, a firm sponsors you for the Series 7 (or the narrower Series 6), and most states also require the Series 63, which needs no sponsor. Once the firm registers you, these let you sell investments. That firm is either the broker-dealer that provides your bank's investment program or a firm outside the bank that hires you. With the Series 65 or 66, a state can then register you through an investment adviser firm as an investment adviser representative, the role that gives investment advice for a fee.
Banks already employ advisors. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) counts 16%1 of personal financial advisor jobs in banks and similar lenders. When a bank offers brokerage in its branches, a broker-dealer, a securities firm registered with FINRA, provides it under a written networking agreement (FINRA Rule 3160). Until you are registered through that firm, federal law limits your part in brokerage to clerical work, describing investment types in general terms and at most a small one-time referral fee that cannot depend on a sale.
No official source publishes a timeline for this move, so month counts quoted elsewhere are estimates without a source. The pace depends mostly on whether and when a firm sponsors you, and no rule entitles a bank employee to sponsorship. O*NET, the U.S. Department of Labor's occupation database, rates selling as more important in teller jobs than in advisor jobs, and its widest gaps are in giving advice and building plans.
Quick facts
- Share of advisor jobs in banks and similar lenders (BLS, 2025)
- 16%1
- Personal financial advisor jobs (BLS, 2025)

- Securities sales agent jobs, the licensed banker category (BLS, 2025)
- 531,0004 in the projections count, 489,5703 in the OEWS survey
- Projected job change, 2025 to 2035 (BLS)
- Tellers -13.2%4, securities sales agents 1.4%4, advisors 1.4%4, all occupations 3.5%4

- Median $105,0703. The lowest-paid tenth earned under $50,1903 and the top tenth over $357,0203.
- Each pair of job counts differs because BLS builds the two counts differently.
- The projections count includes self-employed workers, and the OEWS survey counts wage and salary jobs only.
- The pay figures are BLS survey data for wage and salary advisors at all employers and all experience levels, and they leave out self-employed advisors.
- They are not starting pay and not what any one person or firm pays.
- Older figures still circulate.
- Pages and AI answers that show advisor job growth of 17.1%11 are quoting the replaced 2023 to 2033 projection, and some still list a Series 7 fee lower than the one FINRA charges today.
- The figures above are the current releases.
Personal banker vs financial advisor, what is the difference?
A personal banker is not a financial advisor by title. The difference is registration, which decides what each person may recommend. A personal banker can know every bank account inside out and still be barred from recommending a single fund.
| Question | Teller or personal banker, not registered | Licensed banker, registered with the bank's broker-dealer | Advisor giving advice for a fee (investment adviser representative) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Core work | Deposits, withdrawals, accounts and loans for bank customers | Bank work plus selling the investments their registration covers, through the bank's broker-dealer | Planning with clients around their goals and recommending or choosing investments for them |
| What they may say about investments | Describe in general terms the types of investments the bank and its broker-dealer offer, and refer the customer (Exchange Act Section 3(a)(4)(B)(i)) | Recommend the securities their registration covers, mutual funds, variable annuities, variable life insurance, unit investment trusts and municipal fund securities9 with a Series 6, or all securities products6 with a Series 7 | Give investment advice for a fee once a state registers them |
| Registration | None needed for banking work | FINRA registration through the broker-dealer on Form U4, the standard registration form (Rule 1210), plus the Series 63 in most states | State registration as an investment adviser representative after the Series 65, or the Series 66 with the Series 7 |
| Standard when recommending | Not applicable | Regulation Best Interest, the retail customer's best interest | The investment adviser firm's fiduciary duty of care and loyalty under the Advisers Act |
| How pay is structured | Salary set by the bank. Referral fees are limited by the rules in the step-by-step section | May receive incentive pay for brokerage transactions, which the networking exception allows only for registered, qualified staff (Exchange Act Section 3(a)(4)(B)(i)) | Asset-based, fixed or other direct fees, described in the firm's Form CRS relationship summary |
"Personal banker", "relationship banker" and "licensed banker" are bank job titles, not regulatory ones. Some bankers hold a Series 6 or 7 registration, or an investment adviser representative registration, and some hold none. What a banker may do follows the registration, not the title.
Which bank skills carry over to financial advising?
O*NET rates how important each activity and knowledge area is to a job, on a scale of 1 (Not Important) to 5 (Extremely Important)12. The table compares tellers (43-3071.00), securities sales agents (41-3031.00, the O*NET occupation for a licensed banker who sells investments) and personal financial advisors (13-2052.00) (tellers, securities sales agents). The ratings say how important each activity is to the job as a whole. They do not measure any one person's skill.
| Skill or work activity | Advisors | Tellers | Securities sales agents |
|---|---|---|---|
| Performing for or working directly with the public | 3.4813 | 4.3213 | 3.4913 |
| Establishing and maintaining interpersonal relationships | 4.5613 | 4.213 | 4.2313 |
| Customer and personal service (knowledge) | 4.4413 | 3.8813 | 4.3213 |
| Evaluating information to determine compliance with standards | 413 | 4.1613 | 3.9613 |
| Selling or influencing others | 3.4213 | 3.6713 | 3.7313 |
- Working with the public. Teller jobs rate it above advisor jobs.
- Relationships. Both bank groups rate it high, a little below advisors.
- Customer service. Close to advisors for securities sales agents, further off for tellers.
- Compliance with standards. Teller jobs rate it above advisor jobs. Advisors also work under disclosure and supervision rules.
- Selling or influencing others. Teller and securities sales agent jobs both rate it above advisor jobs.
Some sites say tellers carry over a set percentage of an advisor's skills. No official source publishes a figure like that. O*NET publishes the ratings themselves, and this page uses them. The teller ratings were collected in 2018, earlier than the advisor and securities sales agent ratings, and appear as they stand in the O*NET 31.0 release.
What does a banker need to learn, and what covers each gap?
These are the ratings where advisors sit well above tellers, and above securities sales agents too, by less in every row.
| Gap | Tellers13 | Securities sales agents13 | Advisors13 | What closes it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Providing consultation and advice to others | 2.5513 | 2.9513 | 413 | Series 65 or 66 study, then supervised practice |
| Developing objectives and strategies | 2.8113 | 3.0813 | 3.9213 | Financial planning coursework, such as the CFP® education requirement |
| Interpreting the meaning of information for others | 3.3213 | 3.7513 | 4.2313 | Practice explaining a whole plan, not one product |
| Communicating with people outside the organization | 3.2613 | 3.9813 | 4.2113 | Reaching and following up with prospective clients, which becomes part of the job |
| Analyzing data or information | 3.713 | 3.913 | 4.6813 | Exam study and planning coursework |
| Economics and accounting (knowledge) | 3.1113 | 3.9313 | 4.0813 | The SIE and Series 7 or 6 content, then planning coursework |
| Psychology (knowledge) | 1.8813 | 2.5913 | 3.0813 | Experience with clients over time, and the client psychology topics in CFP Board's required coursework |
Advice is the real jump. A branch job is built around a transaction or a product the customer asked about. An advisor's job is built around one client's whole situation and a recommendation for it. The advice row shows the widest gap for tellers and for securities sales agents, who already hold a license, and the strategy row is among the next widest for both.
The economics and accounting gap is mainly a teller gap. Securities sales agents already rate close to advisors here. A teller starts further back, and SIE study is where that begins.
The CFP® certification is optional. CFP Board's education requirement has two parts, coursework through a CFP Board Registered Program and a bachelor's degree. The coursework takes 12-1814 months on average, and the experience requirement is 6,00014 hours, or 4,00014 hours on the apprenticeship path. See the CFP® certification guide.
How do you become a financial advisor at a bank, step by step?
The licensing ladder inside a bank
| Rung | Exams | Firm sponsor needed for the exam | Exam fees (checked October 20265-8) | What it lets you do once registered |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Teller or personal banker | None | No | None | The clerical and referral work in the table below |
| SIE passed | SIE | No | $1005 | Nothing new on the job. Passing the SIE alone does not qualify you for registration or securities business |
| Licensed banker, Series 6 | Series 6 with the SIE, plus the Series 63 | Yes for the Series 6 | $1009 for the Series 6, $14710 for the Series 63, $3475,9,10 with the SIE | Sell only mutual funds, variable annuities, variable life insurance, unit investment trusts and municipal fund securities9 |
| Licensed banker or registered representative, Series 7 | Series 7 with the SIE, plus the Series 63 | Yes for the Series 7 | $3956 for the Series 7, $14710 for the Series 63, $6425,6,10 with the SIE | Sell all securities products6, as a General Securities Representative under FINRA Rule 1220 |
| Advisor, investment adviser representative | Series 65 alone, or Series 66 with the SIE and Series 7 | No, NASAA requires no sponsor | $1878 for the Series 65, $1777 for the Series 66 | Give investment advice for a fee once a state registers you through an investment adviser firm |
These are exam fees as FINRA listed them in October 20265-8. They can change, and state registration and fingerprinting fees are separate.
Take the SIE while you still work at the branch
No firm is needed.
It is open to anyone 185 or older and runs 1055 minutes. FINRA's steps are to create an account, enroll and pay, then schedule the exam5, and you can test at a Prometric test center or online5. Exam prep is at Advisor Train.
Get sponsored for the Series 6 or Series 7
Both need a FINRA member firm to sponsor you.
Inside a bank that is the broker-dealer that provides the investment program, and outside it is the firm that hires you. BLS says that for securities sales jobs most of the licenses require sponsorship by an employer. See how to get sponsored for the Series 7.
Add the Series 63
NASAA, the association of state securities regulators behind the state exams, says most states require it in addition to the FINRA exam before you can sell securities there.
It needs no sponsor and has no corequisite, meaning no other exam has to be passed with it.
Add the Series 65 or 66 to give advice
The Series 66 counts as passing both the Series 63 and 65 when you also hold the SIE and Series 7, so a Series 7 holder can take the Series 66 in place of both.
Without the Series 7, the Series 65 stands alone. In most states, a state exam expires if you are not registered within 215 years of passing.
Be registered before you act
A firm files your Form U4, and states can add their own steps before granting a license.
Passing an exam is not a license.
Variable annuities and variable life insurance are on the Series 6 list, and the SEC notes that variable annuities are regulated by state insurance commissions as well as by the SEC. Ask the sponsoring firm which state insurance license the role needs. The insurance agent page covers that side.
For total cost and time on your own route, use the licensing cost and time tool or the roadmap builder. Exam prep for the Series 6, Series 7, Series 63, Series 65 and Series 66 is at Advisor Train.
What you may do before you hold a license
These limits apply to every bank employee who is not registered with the bank's broker-dealer. They come from the networking exception in Exchange Act Section 3(a)(4)(B)(i) and Regulation R Rule 700.
| You may | You may not |
|---|---|
| Do clerical and ministerial work for brokerage transactions, such as scheduling an appointment with the broker-dealer's registered representative | Recommend a security, a fund or an investment strategy |
| Forward customer funds or securities | Take part in the transaction beyond clerical work |
| Describe in general terms the types of investments the bank and its broker-dealer offer | Receive incentive pay for a brokerage transaction |
| Refer a customer and receive a nominal one-time cash fee of a fixed dollar amount | Receive a referral fee that depends on a purchase or sale, an account being opened, the type of security involved, or multiple transactions resulting |
The fee may depend on the customer contacting or keeping an appointment with the broker-dealer, or meeting objective baseline criteria the bank or broker-dealer sets. Under Rule 700, a fee counts as nominal if it meets any one of several tests, based on the pay range the bank sets for your job family, your own base pay, or a fixed-dollar amount the rule adjusts for inflation. This page does not say what any bank pays.
How the investment desk in a bank works
- Under FINRA Rule 3160, a broker-dealer that works on bank premises must be clearly identified as the one providing the service, work in an area that shows its own name, and where practicable stay physically separate from routine deposit taking.
- The bank and the broker-dealer sign a written networking agreement covering each side's responsibilities and the compensation arrangements.
- At or before account opening, customers are told in writing, and out loud when the account is opened at the bank, that the broker-dealer provides the service and that the products are not FDIC insured, are not bank deposits and can lose value, including the money put in.
What this means for your career is who you would work for. A banker who becomes a registered representative is registered through the broker-dealer, which files their Form U4, and can still be employed by the bank. Rule 3160 also requires the broker-dealer to tell the bank promptly if it terminates for cause someone the bank employs.
Inside the bank or at another firm, how do the two routes differ?
The two routes differ more in their rules than in their job titles.
| Question | Inside the bank's investment program | An advisor or trainee role at a firm outside the bank |
|---|---|---|
| Who sponsors your Series 6 or 7 | The broker-dealer that provides the bank's program, for a role it sponsors | The broker-dealer that hires you. The Series 65 needs no sponsor |
| Where clients come from | Bank customers, including those referred by branch staff under the networking rules above | Your own marketing and referrals |
| Your registration | The bank's broker-dealer files your Form U4 | If you were registered at the bank, its broker-dealer files a Form U5 and the new firm files a new Form U4 |
| Bank customers you served | Stay bank customers | Stay bank customers. Limits on contacting them come from your agreement and the bank's privacy obligations |
The inside route depends on your bank's program having a sponsored role open. While you still work at the branch, you can ask the program which roles it sponsors and pass the SIE, which needs no firm, so either route starts from the same place. The broker-dealer vs RIA guide explains how each channel works.
What changes if you leave the bank?
If you hold a registration and leave the bank, whether for a firm outside it or for a break, several clocks start.
| What happens | The rule |
|---|---|
| The broker-dealer files a Form U5, the Uniform Termination Notice for Securities Industry Registration16, no later than 3017 days after your association ends, and gives you a copy | FINRA By-Laws, Article V, Section 3 |
| The Form U5 records a reason for the termination, such as a voluntary resignation, being permitted to resign, or a discharge, and asks for an explanation for the last two | Form U5, Section 3 |
| Your Series 6 or 7 qualification lapses if you go 218 years without being registered as a representative (two-year rule), and you would have to pass the exam again | FINRA Rule 1210 |
| The SIE must be retaken if you have been neither registered nor passed it within 418 years | FINRA Rule 1210 |
| If you were registered in a category for at least 119 year right before leaving, FINRA's Maintaining Qualifications Program can keep it current for up to 519 years, with annual continuing education and a yearly fee, $10019 when checked in October 20265-8 | FINRA Maintaining Qualifications Program |
These rules do not settle two things. Waiting periods before a new job, notice periods and limits on contacting customers are set by firm policy and your employment agreement, so read your own agreement and get your own legal advice. And customer relationships built at the bank are covered by the bank's privacy obligations and your agreement, which is why this page gives no guidance on bringing customers with you.
What does a financial advisor do day to day, and what is the first year like?
Day to day, BLS describes an advisor meeting clients about their financial goals, explaining investment options and their risks, recommending investments or choosing them on the client's behalf, helping clients plan for things like education or retirement, and checking accounts to see whether changes are needed. New advisors work under the supervision of senior advisors and learn how to build a client network, and BLS says this training usually lasts more than a year20.
A banker can start in a licensed banker role in the bank's investment program, in a registered role at a brokerage or advisory firm outside the bank, or in an entry role such as paraplanner or client service associate on an advisor's team. Jobs at a financial advisory firm explains each.
Three things change from the branch.
- Clients come from you. BLS says many advisors spend a lot of time marketing their services and must be convincing and persistent in selling them.
- The schedule moves. BLS notes advisors may meet clients on evenings and weekends.
- Pay works differently. BLS says advisors at financial services firms are often paid a salary plus bonuses, while advisors at investment or planning firms and self-employed advisors charge a flat fee or earn commissions on the products they sell.
Questions people ask
Is it hard to go from banker to financial advisor?
The exams are the measurable part. The Series 7 has 1256 questions over 2256 minutes, and after a first or second failure a FINRA exam can be retaken after 3021 days, or 1522 days from 23. The bigger change is the work. O*NET rates providing consultation and advice to others 413 for advisors against 2.5513 for tellers, and finding clients becomes part of the job.
How long does it take to go from banker to financial advisor?
There is no set length. The SIE needs no firm and its result lasts 45 years. Once enrolled, FINRA gives 12024 days to sit an exam and NASAA gives 12015 days. The Series 6 or 7 waits until a firm sponsors you, and a state exam such as the Series 65 or 66 expires in most states if you are not registered within 215 years. After registration, BLS says training under senior advisors usually lasts more than a year20. The licensing cost and time tool adds up the exam steps for your route.
What other jobs can a bank teller move into?
BLS says experienced tellers may advance to head teller or other supervisory or managerial positions, some advance to occupations such as loan officer, and they can also move to sales positions. BLS does not name securities sales, but a licensed role selling investments is a sales position, and it is the route this page covers.
Can a retired banker become a financial advisor?
Yes, if a firm sponsors and registers you. The SIE is open to anyone 185 or older. If you held a Series 6 or 7 at the bank, the date your registration ended matters. After 218 years without registration the exam must be passed again, unless you were eligible for FINRA's Maintaining Qualifications Program and joined it, which you can do when you leave or later, before the qualification lapses.
Will AI replace financial advisors?
BLS does not project that. Its Occupational Outlook Handbook says AI tools for financial advice may moderate demand for advisors, while many consumers are expected to keep relying on human advisors for more complex and specialized advice, and it projects advisor jobs to change by 1.4%4 from 2025 to 2035. For branch work, BLS names technology as the reason for the projected fall in teller jobs, tying it to fewer branches, more online banking, automation and ATMs that take on more teller tasks.
