Financial advisor career guides, and the order to read them

To start a financial advisor career, first decide whether the work fits you, then learn the licensing exams and registration for your route, then get hired by a firm that registers you.

On the brokerage route that firm must also sponsor you for the Series 7, the main exam for selling securities, because FINRA, the regulator for brokerage firms, lets only candidates a member firm sponsors take it. The financial advisor career guides below follow that order, with three to read first and the rest sorted by the decision you are making.

If you are still in another job, you can begin before you leave it. No FINRA or NASAA licensing exam requires a college degree, and FINRA opens its entry exam, the Securities Industry Essentials (SIE), to anyone 181 or older with no firm behind them.

Deciding if it fits

  • Is financial advisor a good career? An honest look

It is a good career for people who like advising clients and can keep finding new ones, and a hard one for people who do not want to sell.

The guide covers the daily work, the selling, the stress, job growth that BLS projects as slower than average, and the first year after a career switch, with a self-check at the end.

  • Is it too late to become a financial advisor at 40, 50 or 60?

    Not under the rules.

No FINRA, NASAA or CFP Board rule sets an upper age, and the only age in FINRA and NASAA exam rules is the SIE minimum. In 2025 the median personal financial advisor was 43.67 years old, against 42.17 for all employed people.

For financial planning careers specifically, CFP Board publishes a Guide to Careers in Financial Planning for students, recent graduates and career changers. It covers entry points, typical career tracks and the kinds of companies that employ planners, and CFP Board asks for your name and email before you download it.

Choosing the job and where to work

  • Jobs at a financial advisory firm and which need a license

A firm employs many people besides its advisors, from client service and operations to paraplanners and compliance.

The duties decide which jobs need a license, not the title, and client service and operations jobs need no exam while the work stays clerical.

  • Broker-dealer vs RIA vs dually registered

A broker-dealer buys and sells securities for customers or for its own account, and an RIA, a registered investment adviser, is a firm paid to give investment advice.

For a new advisor the biggest difference is the route in, since a broker-dealer must sponsor your Series 7, while for an RIA you can pass the Series 65 on your own first.

  • How to become an independent financial advisor

You pass the same exams as any advisor and sign with a firm as an independent contractor instead of an employee.

Independent describes that contract, not a separate license, and the firm still supervises you.

Getting licensed and hired

  • How to become a financial advisor, step by step. You pass the FINRA or NASAA exams for the work you want to do, then a firm registers you with FINRA, your state or both. The guide sets the brokerage, advisory and insurance routes side by side, with their exam fees and what you can do before a firm hires you.
  • Do you need a degree to be a financial advisor? No license requires one. BLS lists a bachelor's degree as the typical entry education, and CFP® certification requires a bachelor's in any field. The guide sets each rule side by side and shows the share of advisors without a bachelor's from BLS data.
  • How to get sponsored for the Series 7. You get hired by a FINRA member firm into a job that needs the license, such as an advisor trainee program, a brokerage client service role or a registered assistant job. A sponsor is an employer, not a service you can buy.
  • Can you be a financial advisor with a felony? In some cases. A felony conviction in the last 108 years is a statutory disqualification, which bars you from FINRA member firms unless a firm files an eligibility application for you and FINRA approves it, while an older felony is not a disqualification but must still be disclosed on your Form U4.
  • CFP® certification requirements, how long they take and what they cost. CFP Board requires a bachelor's degree in any field, financial planning coursework, a pass on the CFP® exam, 6,0009 hours of planning work, or 4,0009 hours in an apprenticeship, and an ethics declaration. It is a professional credential, not a license, so you still register through FINRA and your state to sell securities or give advice.

The licenses page matches the main advisor exams on FINRA's exam list, and the state insurance license, to the work each one allows. These guides do not cover exam prep. For that, see Advisor Train.

Planning the time

  • How long does it take to become a financial advisor?

Usually more than a year10 from the day a firm hires you, because BLS says supervised training under senior advisors lasts that long.

The exams fall before and early in that stretch and go faster, since each must be taken within 12011 days of enrolling, so the wait no rule sets is getting hired.

How much it costs to become a licensed financial advisor adds up the exam fees and your state's registration fee for your route.

Switching from another career

  • How to become a financial advisor as a second career

Take the steps that need no firm while you keep your job, then get hired by a firm that sponsors and registers you.

An SIE pass lasts 41 years, so it can come early, while a Series 63, 65 or 66 expires in most states if you are not registered within 212 years, so it belongs close to a job offer.

For the path from a specific job, such as teacher, police officer or the military, see jobs that transfer to financial advisor, which measures how each job's skills overlap with an advisor's.

Terms you will meet

  • Financial advisor career terms

The exam, registration and firm words you meet on the way in, each in plain words with the rule or form it comes from.

They fall into four groups, the exams, the registrations they lead to, the filings and records such as the Form U4 and your CRD number, and the people who supervise you.

Questions people ask

What does a financial advisor do day to day?

Most of the day goes to clients and people who might become clients. BLS lists the first duties as meeting with clients about their financial goals and explaining to potential clients the services the advisor provides. Between meetings advisors help clients plan for goals such as retirement, research investments and check whether a client's accounts need changes. A new advisor trains under senior advisors, which BLS says usually lasts more than a year10, and much of that training is learning to build a client network. The honest look at the career breaks the work down task by task.

Do you need a degree to become a financial advisor?

Not for the licensing exams. BLS lists "Bachelor's degree"2 as the typical entry education, which describes who firms tend to hire, not a rule. CFP® certification, an optional credential, does require a bachelor's degree, and CFP Board allows up to 59 years after its exam to finish it. Do you need a degree to be a financial advisor has the full answer.

What licenses do financial advisors need?

It depends on the work. Buying and selling securities for clients at a brokerage takes the SIE and Series 7 and, in most states, the Series 63, while giving investment advice for a fee takes the Series 65, or the Series 66 with the SIE and Series 7. NASAA says a qualifying professional designation, such as CFP® certification, can waive the Series 65 but not the Series 66. Selling insurance takes a state insurance agent license, called a producer license. The licenses page matches each of these exams to the work.

How much do financial advisors make?

The median annual wage for personal financial advisors was $105,0703 in May 2025, according to the BLS wage survey. One in ten earned less than $50,1903 and one in ten earned more than $357,0203. These are survey figures for advisors on payrolls at all employers, leaving out the self-employed. They describe people already in the job, not what any one firm pays or what someone new to it earns. Many sites still show pay from an earlier BLS release, so check the year beside any figure. The advisor career map shows the same survey by state.

What skills does a financial advisor need?

BLS names analytical, interpersonal, math, sales and speaking skills, and says advisors "must be convincing and persistent in selling their services" to grow a client base. Getting licensed is the easier half, and building a client base is the harder one. The jobs that transfer pages show which of these skills your current job already uses.
