How long does it take to become a financial advisor?
Becoming a financial advisor usually takes more than a year1 from the day a firm hires you, because the Bureau of Labor Statistics says supervised training under senior advisors usually lasts that long.
The licensing exams fall before and early in that stretch. Each must be taken within 1202 days of enrolling, and a failed exam adds a wait before you can test again.
The one wait no rule sets is getting hired. The Series 7, the main exam for selling securities, needs a firm to sponsor you, which means you work for the firm and it enrolls you for the exam. The SIE, the entry exam from FINRA, the industry's self-regulator, needs no firm. Neither does the Series 65, the exam for giving investment advice for a fee, so you can pass either while still in your current job.
Answers that put the total at several years count a bachelor's degree, which BLS says advisors typically have but no securities exam requires, and often add CFP® certification, an optional credential that CFP Board says typically takes 18-243 months.

How long does it take to get a financial advisor license?
Licensing takes as long as your exams plus the firm's filing.
The exam windows have set lengths and hiring has none, so what sets the pace is when a firm hires you, because the Series 7 and the registration both wait for one. On the brokerage route, working for a broker-dealer (a firm registered to buy and sell securities for clients), the steps run in this order.
| Step, in order | Needs a firm? | What sets the time |
|---|---|---|
| Pass the SIE | No. Open to anyone 184 or older | Sit it within 1202 days of enrolling, with an immediate4 pass or fail result |
| Get hired by a firm that will sponsor you | This step is the firm | No rule. It runs as long as hiring takes |
| Pass the Series 7, or the Series 6 for a narrower set of products | Yes. The firm sponsors you, and the SIE is its corequisite, an exam you must also pass | The same window |
| Pass the Series 63, or the Series 66 to also work as an investment adviser representative (IAR) | No sponsor needed. It is the state law exam from NASAA, the association of state securities regulators | NASAA's 1205-day window, with the result given at the exam site5 |
| Get a state insurance license, if the job includes selling insurance | No. Anyone who sells insurance needs a producer license, which your state insurance regulator issues | Each state sets its own steps |
| Form U4, fingerprints and state approval | Yes. The firm files your Form U4, the registration form for each person it hires | Fingerprints within 306 days of the filing. In Idaho, under its version of the 2002 Uniform Securities Act, registration takes effect 457 days after a completed filing unless denied. California's regulator says a filing is not an automatic approval |
| Supervised training | Yes, at the firm | Usually more than a year1 (BLS) |
Passing the SIE before you apply leaves fewer exams for after you are hired. How people land a sponsored role is in how to get a firm to sponsor your Series 7. Variable annuities fall under both insurance and securities rules, so the licenses a job needs depend on what it sells.
Which licenses financial advisors need covers that. Insurance steps differ by state, and the state guides cover them.
On the advisory route, working for an investment adviser firm, the Series 65 takes the place of the SIE, the Series 7 and the Series 63, and you can pass it before any firm hires you. You still need an adviser firm to register you, so the hiring wait comes after the exam instead of before it. Registration and training work the same way.

How long is financial advisor training?
BLS says new advisors usually train for more than a year1 after they are hired, working under the supervision of senior advisors.
That is the only official figure. Some sites put it at a few months to a year, which BLS does not support. Each firm runs its own program, and financial advisor training programs covers how they are set up.
"On your own" after training never means working outside a firm. FINRA Rule 1210 says each person engaged in a member firm's securities business must be registered with FINRA, and states register IARs through a firm's Form U4 filing. It means serving your own clients without a senior advisor overseeing your training. What comes after is in the financial advisor career path.
What does the first year as a financial advisor look like?
The first year is that supervised stretch. BLS says new advisors learn to build a client network, develop investment portfolios and take on other duties under senior advisors. It also says many advisors spend a lot of time marketing their services, and that client meetings can fall on evenings and weekends, which matters if you are used to a fixed schedule. The exams a firm sponsors, such as the Series 7, come at the start. Once you are registered, FINRA Rule 1240 adds the Regulatory Element of continuing education every year you stay registered, with the first due by the end of the year after you register.
How long it takes from where you are starting
Each row shows what you can do today without a firm, what has to wait for one, and the clock that limits you.
| Where you start | What you can do now, without a firm | What waits for a firm | The clock to watch |
|---|---|---|---|
| No license and no firm | The SIE, or the Series 65 | The Series 7 or 6, the Form U4 and state approval | None yet. Your first exam pass starts the clocks below |
| Passed the SIE, no firm yet | The Series 63 or 65 | The Series 7, which needs a sponsor | A firm must file your registration before your SIE pass is 410 years old |
| Passed the Series 65, no firm yet | Nothing more on the exam side | Registration as an IAR through an adviser firm, or one you start | Most states give you 25 years from passing to register. In states that adopt NASAA's program, yearly continuing education can keep a Series 63 or 65 valid for up to 511 years |
| Adding CFP® certification | Coursework, the CFP® exam, the degree, and experience from past work | Apprenticeship experience, which needs a supervising CFP® professional | CFP Board's windows for the degree and experience, in the CFP® section below |
| Coming back after time away | Join FINRA's Maintaining Qualifications Program, if you qualify, before your exams lapse | Re-registration through a firm | Exams lapse after 210 years out of registration. The program stretches that to up to 512 years if you were registered at least 112 year before leaving and stay eligible |

Why other answers say it takes years
Each of these claims circulates in search results and AI answers. None of them comes from a regulator.
| What you may read | What the official sources say |
|---|---|
| You need a degree before you can start | No securities exam requires one. BLS says advisors typically need a bachelor's degree, though employers usually do not require a specific course of study. CFP Board allows the degree up to 53 years after the CFP® exam |
| Licensing takes a set number of months | No rule sets it. The exam windows have set lengths, but the Series 7 waits until a firm hires you, and no rule times hiring |
| The industry timeline is the length of one firm's program | Each firm sets its own training. No regulator publishes a time to working on your own |
| CFP® certification is part of becoming an advisor | CFP® certification is optional. It is a certification from CFP Board, not a license, and runs on its own clock |
| Pass the exams and you are licensed | NASAA says passing an exam is a prerequisite to a license, not a license. Registration and state approval come after |
What can delay becoming a financial advisor?
A failed exam. Each fail starts a wait before you can test again, and some of the waits get shorter in January 2027.
| Exam and rule period | Wait after a first or second fail | Wait after a third fail | Total waiting before a fourth try |
|---|---|---|---|
| FINRA exams (SIE, Series 6, 7), today | 308 days | 1808 days | 24013 days |
| FINRA exams, from January 19, 2027 | 159 days | 609 days | 9014 days |
| NASAA exams (Series 63, 65, 66), enrollments before January 4, 2027 | 305 days | 1805 days | 2405 days |
| NASAA exams, enrollments from January 4, 2027 | 3015 days | 6015 days | 12016 days |
The longer wait applies after three fails in a row within a two-year period, and each wait applies only to the exam you failed.
A missed exam window. Each exam must be taken inside its enrollment window. NASAA grants extensions only for illness or injury, not for extra study time.
An expired pass. An SIE or state exam pass that runs out before a firm registers you has to be taken again (the limits are in the table above). That is the risk of passing the SIE long before you look for a sponsored role.
Time out of the industry. Exams lapse after time out of registration unless you are in FINRA's Maintaining Qualifications Program. Under FINRA Rule 1210, active military duty can pause the exam lapse and the SIE clock only for people who were registered. That covers someone registered when called up, and someone whose registration ended within the 217 years before duty began. FINRA must be told of the service, and the pause ends 9018 days after active service ends. An SIE pass held by someone never registered keeps running. The military to financial advisor guide has the full conditions.
Something on your background check. The Form U4 asks about criminal, regulatory and financial history, and states can add their own checks. What can delay or stop a registration is in Form U4 and background checks.
Can you do it while keeping your job?
The rules let you start alongside another job. They do not decide whether you should leave it.
- The SIE needs no firm. FINRA lets you take it at a Prometric test center or online4.
- The Series 63 and 65 need no sponsor. The Series 65 is given at a test center, and online only for candidates who need a testing accommodation. The Series 66 needs no sponsor either, but the Series 7 is its corequisite, so in practice it waits for a firm.
- The Series 6 and 7 need a firm. FINRA requires candidates to be associated with and sponsored by a member firm.
- CFP® coursework runs on your schedule. CFP Board puts the average at 12-183 months, and notes that some people earn their experience hours in part-time positions while they continue their current career.
- Once registered, outside jobs need written notice. FINRA Rule 3270 says a registered person may not work for another person, or be paid for business outside the firm, without first giving the firm written notice. The firm then decides whether to allow it, and can set conditions or prohibit it.
Advisor Train covers studying while you work. If you are weighing the switch later in life, is it too late to become a financial advisor covers age, and becoming a financial advisor as a second career covers the move itself.
Financial planner, wealth manager, paraplanner and CFP® timelines
CFP® certification from CFP Board is optional, and NASAA says most states accept it in place of the Series 65 exam, though each state sets its own list.
It takes coursework through a CFP Board Registered Program, the CFP® exam, a bachelor's degree in any field (which can come after the exam), qualifying experience and an ethics step.
CFP Board puts the typical total at 18-243 months and does not say what that assumes about experience. Hours from up to 1019 years before the exam count, so experience from past work can apply. Starting with none, the experience alone takes at least 1503,19 weeks of full-time work on the standard path, or 1003,19 weeks on the apprenticeship path, because CFP Board credits hours only up to a full-time week. It can be finished up to 519 years after the exam. Exam dates and full requirements are in CFP® certification requirements, and practice for the CFP® exam is at Advisor Train.
How long does it take to become a financial planner?
Financial planner describes the work, not a license. If the work includes securities or investment advice, the time is the same licensing path above, plus CFP® certification if you choose it.
How long does it take to become a wealth manager?
Wealth manager is a title firms use. No exam or license carries the name, so the timeline is the same as for any advisor.
How long does it take to become a paraplanner?
Paraplanner is a support role with no exam of its own, so the time is mostly getting hired, plus any license the job calls for. CFP Board counts work that supports the financial planning process as qualifying experience, and its shorter apprenticeship path needs direct supervision by a CFP® professional and client work across every primary element of the planning process. More is in what a paraplanner does.
Questions people ask
How quickly can you become a financial advisor?
The licensing part takes less time after hire when you pass the exams that need no firm before you apply, the SIE on the brokerage route or the Series 65 on the advisory route, though a pass can expire if no firm registers you in time. That leaves the Series 7 and a state law exam, or only registration, once a firm hires you. No route skips the supervised training that follows, which BLS says usually lasts more than a year1, so answers that promise a finished advisor in a few months are counting only the exams.
How long is the SIE valid?
An SIE pass lasts 44 years, measured to the date a firm files your registration. If no firm registers you in that time, you take the SIE again.
What is the median pay for a financial advisor?
BLS puts the median at $105,07020 a year in May 2025 for advisors on a payroll at all employers, with the lowest tenth under $50,19020 and the highest tenth over $357,02020. The survey leaves out the self-employed and covers advisors at every career stage, so it is not a forecast of what any one person earns, in training or after, or of pay at any one firm. Figures by state are in financial advisor salary and jobs by state.
Will AI replace financial advisors?
BLS does not project that. It projects advisor jobs to grow 1%21 from 2025 to 2035, slower than average, with about 17,10021 openings a year as advisors retire or leave the field. It says AI tools may moderate demand, but expects many consumers to keep relying on human advisors for more complex and specialized advice. Some pages still show 17.1%22 growth, a figure from the older 2023 to 2033 projection. Is financial advisor a good career? covers the outlook.
How long does it take to study for the Series 7?
Study time depends on you, and Advisor Train covers it. The rules set only the outer limit, since you sit the exam inside the enrollment window that opens once a firm sponsors you.
