About this tool
One in ten earned less than $50,1901 and one in ten earned more than $357,0201. The figures cover advisors on payrolls at all kinds of employers, include commissions and production bonuses, and leave out the self-employed.
State medians run from $63,3002 in Mississippi, the lowest3, to $166,4002 in New York, the highest3 of any state. The map and tables below put every state and the largest metro areas beside the US.
If you are weighing a move from another job, read these as figures for everyone in the job, new and experienced alike, not a forecast of any one person's pay or of what any firm pays. BLS publishes no pay by years of experience, so no government figure shows what a new advisor earns.

How much do financial advisors make in the US?
The typical personal financial advisor on a payroll earned $105,0701 in May 2025, about 2.11 times the $50,9801 median for all US jobs, according to BLS. Advisor pay also spreads far wider than pay for jobs overall. The line one in ten advisors earned less than sits close to the median for all US jobs.
| May 2025, US, BLS, all employers | Personal financial advisors1 | All occupations1 |
|---|---|---|
| One in ten earned less than | $50,1901 | $31,2001 |
| One in four earned less than | $72,4401 | $37,5901 |
| Median | $105,0701 | $50,9801 |
| Median hourly | $50.511 | $24.511 |
| One in four earned more than | $176,7901 | $80,5201 |
| One in ten earned more than | $357,0201 | $128,5601 |
| Mean | $156,6701 | $69,7701 |
Pay also differs by the kind of employer. These are the medians for the four industries BLS lists in its handbook pay section for advisors.
| Kind of employer, May 2025 | Median advisor wage |
|---|---|
| Securities, commodity contracts and other financial investments | $120,8707 |
| Professional, scientific and technical services | $99,3207 |
| Credit intermediation (banks and similar lenders) | $96,0107 |
| Insurance carriers and related activities | $84,5007 |
BLS says advisors at financial services firms are often paid a salary plus bonuses, while those at investment or planning firms and the self-employed charge a flat fee or earn commissions on the products they sell. None of these figures is broken out by pay setup. How each setup works is in employee, independent and hybrid pay setups.
How does financial advisor salary compare by state?
State medians fall on both sides of the US figure of $105,0701. Florida ($100,9702) and Texas ($99,1602), two of the largest advisor states, sit just under it, and Illinois ($120,1302) sits above it. BLS published a median for 493 states (counting Washington, DC). Louisiana and Maine have none.
Which states have the highest median pay for financial advisors?
The five highest published state medians in May 2025 were New York, New Jersey, California, Connecticut and South Dakota3. This is a sort order on a survey figure for everyone in the job, not a guide to where a new advisor would be paid more.
| State, BLS May 2025, all employers | Median2 | Low tenth earns under2 | Top tenth earns over2 |
|---|---|---|---|
| New York | $166,4002 | $76,1902 | $427,7002 |
| New Jersey | $158,5702 | $78,8602 | $374,5302 |
| California | $130,3302 | $67,6902 | $393,8602 |
| Connecticut | $129,7202 | $59,8902 | $388,2402 |
| South Dakota | $128,7202 | $77,2802 | $337,1402 |
Among the 3208 metro areas with a published median, New York-Newark-Jersey City is the highest9 at $170,0504, ahead of San Francisco-Oakland-Fremont at $160,6104. Several big advisor markets sit below the US median, including Charlotte ($99,4404), Tampa ($82,5804) and Denver ($98,7404).
In almost every state, the spread inside the state is wider than the gap between the highest and lowest state medians. In New York the top tenth of advisors earned more than $427,7002 and the bottom tenth less than $76,1902, which is why every table here shows both ends next to the median.
Living costs differ too. The map shows each state's and metro's price level from the federal Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) as a separate 2024 figure and never uses it to adjust a wage. Licensing and registration in your state are in the state guides.
How the career map works
- Source.Every pay figure and payroll job count comes from the BLS OEWS survey, May 2025, released 6. BLS builds it from a sample of about 1.110 million establishments, collected in 610 panels over 310 years. Outlook figures and the job count that includes the self-employed come from the BLS Employment Projections for 2025 to 2035.
- Who is counted.Wage and salary workers at nonfarm employers in every industry. The self-employed are not in the survey, and they held 9.7%11 of advisor jobs in 2025.
- What wages include.Commissions, incentive pay and production bonuses are in. Bonuses not tied to production, overtime premiums and benefits are out.
- Gaps. When BLS does not publish an estimate, the map says "Not published" and never fills the gap with a guess.
- Updates.BLS publishes new OEWS estimates every year. The map moves to the next release when it is out and never blends two releases.
- Limits. No pay by years of experience or by firm, because BLS does not publish it. Pay by kind of employer exists only for the US as a whole, because BLS publishes industry figures at the national level only. Metro areas follow BLS boundaries, so a metro can cross state lines. State job projections, which BLS links from the Occupational Outlook Handbook, come from state labor market offices and are not on the map. BLS's own OEWS maps let you pick other occupations.

Personal financial advisors (13-2052) in every state and Washington, DC, from the BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics (OEWS) survey, May 2025. Pay figures cover advisors on payrolls at all employers. Advisors employed counts payroll jobs only and leaves out the self-employed. Per thousand jobs is advisors for every thousand jobs of all kinds in the state. The location quotient compares the state's share of advisor jobs with the US share, so above one means more advisors for its size than the US.

Which states have the most financial advisors per capita?
Kansas has the most3 financial advisors per thousand jobs of any state with a published count, at 2.8882. BLS does not count advisors per resident, so per thousand jobs is the closest measure BLS publishes to per capita.
Among the 463 states (counting DC) where BLS published a count, these had the most advisors per thousand jobs in May 2025, highest first. Counts are payroll jobs only, so self-employed advisors are not in them.
| State | Advisors per thousand jobs2 | Location quotient2 | Advisors employed2 |
|---|---|---|---|
| United States | 1.7161 | Baseline | 266,8001 |
| Kansas | 2.8882 | 1.682 | 4,1502 |

| Pennsylvania | 2.0112 | 1.172 | 12,2002 |
Connecticut, Massachusetts, Delaware, Montana and Alaska are not ranked because BLS did not publish their advisor counts.
For metro areas, see financial advisor jobs and pay by city.
By total count the order is different. California has 32,2002 advisors on payrolls, more than any other state2, and the New York-Newark-Jersey City metro has the most9 of any metro at 23,9804, followed by Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim at 13,9804. These rankings are sort orders on a government measure. They show where advisor jobs sit today, not where it is easier to start.
How do securities and insurance sales agents compare?
Securities, commodities and financial services sales agents (securities sales agents for short) and insurance sales agents are separate BLS occupations next to advising. The map can switch to either one.
| May 2025, US, BLS, all employers | Personal financial advisors (13-2052) | Securities sales agents (41-3031) | Insurance sales agents (41-3021) |
|---|---|---|---|
| On payrolls | 266,8001 | 489,5701 | 479,1001 |
| One in ten earned less than | $50,1901 | $48,0401 | $37,3301 |
| Median | $105,0701 | $78,6601 | $62,2801 |

| Openings a year, 2025 to 2035 | 17,10011 | 35,10011 | 43,10011 |
The growth figures are the unrounded BLS projections. The Occupational Outlook Handbook rounds the advisor figure to 1%5.
Why do salary sites show different numbers for financial advisors?
A figure for advisor pay or jobs that does not match this page usually comes from one of these.
| What you may read | What the source says |
|---|---|
| An older BLS release. | BLS publishes new estimates every year, and many pages still quote an earlier one. A national median of $102,14012, for example, is from the May 2024 release, not the current one. Some state salary pages still show metro figures from the May 2019 release as if they were current. BLS also says its survey is less useful for looking at changes over time, so this page shows only the current one. |
| A capped top figure. | Until the May 2025 estimates, BLS showed many high percentile wages only as a floor, $239,20013 or more. Pages built on older releases show a much lower top tenth than the $357,0201 BLS now publishes. |
| Average instead of median. | The mean of $156,6701 sits far above the median of $105,0701 because high earners pull an average up. Some pages call one the other. |
| Percentiles read as groups. | BLS defines a percentile wage as a boundary. The low-end figure is the line one in ten advisors earn less than, and the top figure is the line one in ten earn more than. Neither is the average pay of a bottom or top group, and neither is starting or senior pay, as some charts label them. |
| Different head counts. | BLS's wage survey counts 266,8001 advisors on payrolls and leaves out the self-employed. The Occupational Outlook Handbook counts 299,4005 jobs because it adds them back. Census household surveys, which some data sites use, count more still. They ask people to describe their own job, so they are not built the same way as an employer survey. |
| Older growth projections. | BLS now projects 1%5 growth for 2025 to 2035. Figures near 9.6%14 growth and 24,10014 openings a year come from the 2024 to 2034 projection, and 17.1%15 comes from the 2023 to 2033 one. BLS has released a new projection each year, as these three show, so a growth figure shown without its years may be an old one. |
| Job postings, not a survey. | Job board salary figures average what postings advertise or what users report. They are not a survey of what employers pay. |
| One credential's members only. | Pay surveys run by a professional body cover only its own certificants and are self-reported, so they describe that group, not all advisors. |

Questions people ask
Are financial advisors in demand?
Job growth is slow, though openings still come up every year. BLS projects advisor jobs to grow 1.4%11 from 2025 to 2035 (its handbook rounds this to 1%5), against 3.5%11 for all occupations. It expects about 17,1005 openings a year, mostly to replace advisors who retire or move to other work. Higher growth figures that still circulate come from older projections.
Will AI replace financial advisors?
BLS does not forecast that AI will replace advisors, but it does name AI as a reason demand may grow more slowly. Its job outlook says AI tools for financial advice may moderate demand for advisors, but that many consumers are expected to keep relying on human advisors for more complex and specialized investment advice. What that means for the career is in is financial advisor a good career.
What do the top ten percent of financial advisors earn?
One in ten personal financial advisors on payrolls earned more than $357,0201 in May 2025, according to BLS. That figure is a boundary, not the average pay of the top group, and BLS publishes no percentile above it. At the other end, one in ten earned less than $50,1901, and half earned less than $105,0701. Older pages show a much lower top figure because, until the May 2025 estimates, BLS showed many high percentile wages only as $239,20013 or more.
How much do new financial advisors make?
BLS publishes no pay by years of experience, so there is no government figure for starting pay. The $50,1901 that one in ten advisors earn less than is sometimes labeled starting pay, but it is a line drawn across everyone in the job. What BLS does describe is the first stretch, in which new advisors work under senior advisors while they learn to build a client network, training that usually lasts more than a year16. Entry and support roles are in jobs at a financial advisory firm, and how first-year pay is set (salary, commission or both) is in employee, independent and hybrid pay setups.
