From teacher to financial advisor

Yes, a teacher can become a financial advisor as a second career, with no finance degree and no finance job first.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) says advisors typically need a bachelor's degree, though employers usually do not require a specific field, and lists no related work experience, so the move from teacher to financial advisor is mostly exams and getting hired, not going back to school.

The usual first step is the Securities Industry Essentials (SIE) exam from FINRA, the regulator that oversees brokerage firms. You can take it without a job offer, sit it during a summer break, and a pass stays valid for 41 years (FINRA). Then either a firm hires you and sponsors you for the Series 7, with the Series 66 for the advice side, or you take the Series 65 on your own, which needs no sponsor and no SIE. Either way you work as an advisor only once a firm registers you, and BLS says training under senior advisors usually lasts more than a year2.

What carries over is relationship building and decision making, which O*NET, the U.S. Department of Labor's occupation database, rates close to advisor levels for middle and high school teachers and lower for elementary teachers. What does not is economics and accounting knowledge and selling, along with giving advice and analyzing data, where advisors rate well above every teacher group. If you have a teacher pension, check how many years your plan needs for a lifetime benefit before you set a last day.

Which teaching skills carry over to financial advising?

O*NET rates how important each skill and work activity is to a job, from 1 (Not Important) to 5 (Extremely Important)12 in its database. The table compares personal financial advisors (13-2052.00) with elementary (25-2021.00), middle (25-2022.00) and high school (25-2031.00) teachers on the ratings where high school teachers sit close to advisors or above them. Elementary and middle school ratings vary more, and the table shows them as they are.

O*NET's own task list for high school teachers shows where each of these already happens in a school week. You can use the same wording when you describe your experience to a hiring firm.

  • Establishing and maintaining interpersonal relationships "Confer with parents or guardians, other teachers, counselors, and administrators to resolve students' behavioral and academic problems."
  • Making decisions and solving problems "Guide and counsel students with adjustments, academic problems, or special academic interests."
  • Organizing, planning and prioritizing work "Prepare objectives and outlines for courses of study, following curriculum guidelines or requirements of states and schools."
  • Active listening "Meet with parents and guardians to discuss their children's progress and to determine priorities for their children and their resource needs."
  • Speaking "Instruct through lectures, discussions, and demonstrations in one or more subjects, such as English, mathematics, or social studies."
  • Social perceptiveness "Adapt teaching methods and instructional materials to meet students' varying needs and interests."

BLS describes the advisor side in the same terms, saying advisors must explain complex financial concepts in a way clients understand. O*NET OnLine displays these ratings on a 0 to 10012 scale, so its numbers look different from the tables here, but the order between jobs is the same.

Does teaching experience itself carry over?

Less than most career-change stories suggest. Training and teaching others rates 4.6513 for high school teachers and only 3.2413 for advisors, and instructing as a skill rates 4.1213 against 313. Advisors do explain things, but the job is built around one client's own decisions, not a lesson plan for a class.

What does a teacher need to learn, and what covers each gap?

These are the ratings where advisors sit above teachers, in most rows by a wide margin. Business professors (25-1011.00) are included because their pattern is different. Exam study covers the knowledge rows, and BLS says new advisors also train under senior advisors, usually for more than a year2, where they learn how to build a client network.

Economics and accounting. This is the widest knowledge gap for most teachers. The SIE content outline covers economic factors such as monetary and fiscal policy, financial statements and the business cycle, and the Series 65 outline adds analytical methods such as descriptive statistics and financial ratios. BLS adds that courses in investments, taxes, estate planning, and risk management2 may be helpful, and CFP® certification coursework through a CFP Board Registered Program goes further.

Selling and marketing. No exam closes this gap. BLS says many personal financial advisors spend a lot of time marketing their services and must be convincing and persistent in selling them. Teacher ratings for selling sit low on the scale, so this is the part of the switch to weigh hardest before you decide.

Advising one person. The Series 65 outline gives a whole section to client investment recommendations and strategies, and NASAA, the association of state securities regulators that writes the Series 65 and 66, says the Series 66 covers topics it has determined are necessary to provide investment advice.

How does a teacher become a financial advisor, step by step?

  1. Study for the SIE while you are still teaching

FINRA says the SIE is open to people who want to show basic industry knowledge to prospective employers, so you can take it before you are hired.

It is required on the Series 7 route and optional on the Series 65 route. Exam prep for the SIE is at Advisor Train.

  2. Enroll yourself and sit the SIE

FINRA's steps are to create an account, enroll and pay, then schedule the exam1, and you can test at a Prometric test center or online1.

Enroll under your full legal name and details exactly as a firm will later file them on Form U4, the registration form a firm files for you. FINRA says results that do not match are not imported into your CRD record, FINRA's registration file on you, and you may have to retest. Passing the SIE alone does not let you work in securities.

  3. Choose your license route

The table below sets the two routes side by side.

Passing the Series 65 is normally a prerequisite to registering as an investment adviser representative, the person who gives investment advice for an adviser firm. Some online answers say a teacher must pass the Series 7 and Series 66, but the Series 65 is a second route that you can take before any firm hires you. BLS adds that advisors who sell products such as insurance may need a combination of licenses that varies with what they sell, which the step-by-step guide covers. The license path finder shows which route fits your goal.

  4. Get hired, then registered

The Series 7 needs a sponsoring firm, so the firm that hires you is usually the one that enrolls you for it, and the job search comes before that exam.

BLS counts about 65%14 of advisor jobs at securities and investment firms and 16%14 at banks and other credit firms. Once you are hired, the firm files Form U4, your fingerprints go through the FINRA Fingerprint Program, and states have their own licensing requirements, such as a background check and fees, before they register you.

  5. Add the CFP® certification later if you want it

It is not required to work as an advisor.

CFP Board's education requirement has two parts, coursework through a CFP Board Registered Program and a bachelor's degree in any field. Coursework takes 12-1815 months on average, and the experience requirement is 6,00015 hours, or 4,00015 hours on the apprenticeship path. See the CFP® certification guide.

What it qualifies you forThe Series 7 covers all securities products6. With the SIE and Series 7, the Series 66 counts as passing both the Series 63 and Series 65State registration as an investment adviser representative

These are exam fees as FINRA listed them in October 20261,6-8, before state registration and fingerprint fees, and they can change. The licensing cost and time tool shows cost and time for your route, and the roadmap builder lays out a full plan. Exam prep for the Series 7, Series 65 and Series 66 is also at Advisor Train.

Can you get licensed over the summer while still teaching?

Partly. You can take the SIE over a summer break without a firm, and on the adviser route the Series 65 as well, but you are not registered to work until a firm hires you. BLS says many teachers work a traditional 1016-month school year with a 216-month summer break. The table lays one school year and the years after it against the licensing rules.

  1. When Spring of the school year

What the rules allow Enroll yourself for the SIE. FINRA posts a 12017-day window to take an exam once you are enrolled, so a spring enrollment can reach into the summer break

Rule behind it FINRA exam scheduling

  2. When Early in the summer break

What the rules allow Sit the SIE online or at a test center. After a first or second failed attempt you can retake it after 3018 days (1519 days from January 19, 2027), so an early sitting leaves room for a retake inside a 216-month break

Rule behind it FINRA Rule 1210

  3. When Same or next summer break

What the rules allow On the Series 65 route, enroll yourself and sit the Series 65 too, since NASAA requires no sponsor. Both exams can be taken before you leave teaching, but in most states the Series 65 counts only if you are registered within 220 years of passing

Rule behind it NASAA no-sponsor rule and two-year rule

  4. When Up to 41 years after you pass

What the rules allow The SIE result stays valid while you look for a firm that hires and sponsors you for the Series 7

Rule behind it FINRA Rule 1210

  5. When Within 220 years before you register

What the rules allow On the Series 7 route, take the Series 66 alongside your sponsored Series 7

Rule behind it NASAA two-year rule, followed by most states

  6. When A later July

What the rules allow The CFP® exam is offered in March, July, November21, and the July sitting falls in a summer break

    Rule behind it CFP Board

The rules do not settle your contract. Notice dates and any resignation deadline are set by your district and your contract, so check those before you choose a last day.

What happens to a teacher pension if you leave teaching?

Leaving before you have enough service, or taking a refund of your contributions, can cost you the lifetime benefit you have been building. How many years that takes depends on your state's system and sometimes your tier. Here is what three state systems say on their own pages.

What happens to a teacher pension if you leave teaching?
Retirement systemService needed for a lifetime benefitWhen that benefit can startWhat a refund of contributions does
Teacher Retirement System of TexasAt least 59 years of service credit. Under that, membership ends after 522 consecutive years without a year of service creditWhen you meet the age requirement for your tierEnds membership, loses service credit and forfeits retirement benefits. If you return to TRS later, new rules apply, including a minimum age of 6223 for an unreduced benefit
CalSTRS (California)510 years of service creditFrom age 5510Ends membership and forfeits all CalSTRS benefits
Teachers' Retirement System of Illinois, Tier 2At least 1011 years of serviceFrom age 6211, reduced for each year under 6711Forfeits all rights to TRS benefits (Member Guide)

In all three systems, a lifetime benefit is paid once you reach the plan's retirement age, not when you leave teaching.

Check your own plan's member handbook for three things. How many years of service you have now, how many your tier needs to vest, and what happens to your benefit if you leave your contributions in the plan or take a refund. This page gives facts only, not a recommendation on when to leave or what to do with a pension.

What does the first year as a financial advisor look like?

Day to day, BLS describes the job as meeting clients to talk through their financial goals, explaining the services the firm offers, answering questions about investment options and their risks, recommending or selecting investments, and checking client accounts to see whether changes are needed. In the first year you do this under supervision, since BLS says new advisors work under senior advisors and learn how to build a client network. Entry roles include associate financial advisor, client service associate and paraplanner, and jobs at a financial advisory firm covers the rest, including which ones need a license.

Three things change from teaching.

  • Finding clients is part of the job from the start. That is the selling gap in daily form.
  • The schedule moves. BLS says most advisors work full time, some work more than a standard week, and meetings can fall on evenings and weekends. There is no built-in summer break.
  • Pay works differently. BLS says advisors at financial services firms are often paid a salary plus bonuses, while others charge a flat fee or earn commissions on the products they sell. Neither works like a district salary schedule.

Questions people ask

Is it hard for a teacher to become a financial advisor?

The hard parts are new knowledge and selling, and for some teachers math. O*NET rates mathematics knowledge 3.7313 for advisors, 3.9113 for elementary teachers and 2.7113 for high school teachers as a group, so elementary teachers already rate it higher than advisors do and high school teachers rate it lower. Economics and accounting is the widest knowledge gap, and exam study starts to close it. Selling is the gap no exam covers.

Do financial advisors get paid well?

Pay varies widely, and BLS publishes the range rather than a typical starting figure. In May 2025 the median for wage and salary personal financial advisors at all employers was $105,0704 a year, the lowest-paid tenth earned under $50,1904 and the top tenth over $357,0204. BLS counts commissions and production bonuses in these figures. They cover all experience levels, leave out self-employed advisors, and are not starting pay or what any one person or firm pays. The advisor career map shows the BLS figures for your state and metro.

Will AI replace financial advisors?

BLS does not project that. It says AI tools for financial advice may moderate demand for advisors, while many consumers are expected to keep relying on human advisors for complex and specialized advice. Its current projection is advisor job growth of 1.4%5 from 2025 to 2035, against 3.5%5 for all occupations. Many career sites still quote far higher growth from older projections, so check the date on any growth figure you see. Is financial advisor a good career? covers demand in more depth.

Can a retired or former teacher become a financial advisor?

Yes, whether you retired or left teaching early. The SIE is open to anyone 181 or older. Working after retirement is governed by your pension system's return-to-work rules. CalSTRS, for example, says its earnings limit applies to CalSTRS-covered work in California public schools, and a retiree who takes a job in private industry keeps the full CalSTRS benefit with no CalSTRS earnings limit. Other systems set their own rules, so read yours before you accept an offer. Is it too late to become a financial advisor? covers starting later in life.

Can a professor become a financial advisor?

Yes, through the same exams. Business professors already rate economics and accounting knowledge at 3.9813, close to the advisor rating of 4.0813, so their widest gap is selling, followed by analyzing data, and they still need the same licensing exams.
